I was born in California to a flight attendant mother and pilot father. As a teenager I photographed punk bands at shows I hosted in my mother’s basement and skipped class to spend time in the dark room. The combination of my parents’ careers and my penchant for exploration meant a lot of plane rides and world travel to capture as much as I could.
I attended California College of Arts and Crafts where I studied with Larry Sultan and Jim Goldberg. Their work, as well as the work and mentorship of Todd Hido, were huge influences over me as a young photographer and shaped how I’ve grown as an artist.
I've been named a Surface Avant Guardian (2001) and a part of “The PDN 30” (2003). Having my portrait for Vogue of shoe designer Charlotte Dellal on the cover of PDN in September 2012 was a dream come true.
My first feature film, Echo Park, which premiered at The Los Angeles Film Festival in 2014 has been released by Ava DuVernay's Array in theaters April 15th 2016 and is streaming on Netflix now!
